Chapter 12

Sunday was a lazy day. After talking it over with Zach, they had tried All Saints, and he seemed to enjoy going there. She no longer had to argue with him to attend the youth services. She already felt a kinship with the members and had been invited to join a women’s Bible study. Andrew and Angela’s parents had introduced themselves the first week, and Deke had made a point of introducing her to the parents who were currently leading youth Bible studies.

After the morning service, she and Zach went out to lunch. He was excited because today was the first day he was off grounding, so as soon as they got home, he grabbed his board and headed out the door.

She didn’t think anything about it until she noticed it was almost six, and she hadn’t heard him return. She went out on the front porch and looked up and down the street. Their block, unlike most of those in Queen Anne, was fairly level, with a gentle downward slant, which in Zach’s opinion made it a perfect place to try new maneuvers. So it was not uncommon for him to spend hours skateboarding right out front. But he wasn’t anywhere within sight. She punched in number 2 on her speed dial, only to hear his cell phone ringing from his bedroom. Great, he’d gone out without his phone.

Finally, at six-thirty she gave in her to fears and got into her Volvo to drive by all the places she knew he frequented. She didn’t see Zach or any other kids out plying their boards. By seven she admitted she was very scared. She didn’t know who to call or where to turn to help, but suddenly, remembering Deke’s kindness to Zach, she dialed the number on the Home Construction business card he’d given her. She didn’t figure he would be in the office, but she hoped that there were be an emergency contact number on the voice mail.

“Hello?” His deep voice answered almost immediately.

All her carefully prepared talk disappeared in an instant, “Deke, Zach hasn’t come home. He’s been gone all day, and I can’t find him at any of his usual places.” She stopped. What did she think he could do that she couldn’t? She realized that she was tired of raising a teen all on her own, and she longed for someone to share her fears with.

Deke’s voice broke in, “I don’t think he’s out back, but I’ll check and call you right back.”

She stood holding the receiver and staring into space. Where could he be?

Meanwhile, Deke, snagged a jacket off the hook by his back door and grabbed a flashlight. Woofer, happy at the prospect of a walk leaped out the door ahead of him. Deke called him to heel and headed to the back of his property. Behind his storage shed, most of the land remained undisturbed, and he could have walked it blindfolded. Woofer explored all the fun new smells since he’d been out a few hours ago.
